Fostering Literacy through Art!

There are several ways to connect literacy and art. This is especially helpful with visual learners in your classroom.
Here are some ideas to bring to the classroom.
  • Introduce a concept/theme of a lesson with a short comic strip- this helps all students visual or not. Students will be focused and engaged. * For a technology twist- why not use an online comic strip? Here is a site where students can create their own educational comic strip! It's a great way to integrate art, literacy and technology! Make your own comic strip!
  • Storybook Art- Here is a great site about storybook art
  • Picture-Writing and Image-Making- helping diverse learners understand literacy through art.

  • Story Mapping is another great way for students to practice reading comprehension and sequencing. A great site is http://www.readwritethink.org. It has great resources for various genres of reading and writing. Students really love the shape poem feature!
  • What about having your student/child make a storybook on the computer? That way they can use technology, and reading skills, typing skills and use different graphics available to create a personalized storybook. Check this lesson out to see how easy it really is! http://www.sun.com/aboutsun/comm_invest/ogp/projects/storybook.html
  • Another GREAT site is www.monsterexchange.org. I have used this with my students and they loved it! In this site, students draw a monster and write a descriptive paragraph about it. Then, you pair with another classroom from somewhere around the world and exchange descriptive paragraphs. The students draw the monster they have recieved a description of. After both pictures have been drawn, teachers scan and upload the images so students can see how effective their description was. It's fantastic!
